ALLCHURCHES (COL) large-01 (1)

St John’s Church, Penge is delighted to have been awarded a grant for £2250 from Allchurches Trust which completed funding to replace two very old and non-working boilers with two brand new boilers to drive the church heating.

Heating the large, beautiful Victorian church building has always been a challenge. Both of the previous boilers had failed and were beyond repair, meaning that from Autumn 2020 there was no way to heat the church building. Facing a bill for new boilers of just over £23000, the church launched a ‘boiler fund’ and generous donations from church members, another local church and the deanery, covered most of the cost. The grant from AllChurches Trust completed the funding required, meaning that the work could then go ahead.

Throughout the Covid pandemic, the church has been meeting weekly on-line. St John’s is currently between vicars, so services have been managed by a team volunteers from the church family, overseen by the church wardens and PCC. The timing of the grant and the subsequent work to carry out the boiler replacement has meant that as restrictions begin to be lifted, the church can be heated and will be ready to welcome people back through the doors for services.

Apart from weekly services, one of the main ministries of St John’s is the Little Fish Toddler group, meeting twice weekly and welcoming over 60 adults and up to 100 children at each session. Without church heating, it is not possible to open up in the winter months for this group, much valued by the local community, so the completion of the work means that when the Toddler group is able to start up again as restrictions are lifted, those families can start coming back into the church. This is a valuable community group and outreach opportunity and has been much missed during 2020.

Steve Miller, Churchwarden, said:
“The church boilers have given us problems for several years, with successive repairs not proving to give long term solutions. Now that this work is complete, thanks in part to the grant from Allchurches Trust, we have a reliable heating system as we look forward to opening up again following the Covid pandemic.”

Allchurches Trust is one of the UK's largest grant-making charities and gave more than £23 million to churches, charities and communities in 2020. Its funds come from its ownership of Ecclesiastical Insurance Group.

About Allchurches Trust:
Allchurches Trust is one of the UK’s largest grant-making charities. Our mission is to equip and empower Christian organisations to have a positive and transformative impact on lives and communities. We welcome applications from all parts of the UK and Ireland, particularly from areas of social and economic deprivation. We support the repair, restoration, protection and improvement of church buildings, cathedrals and other places of Christian worship, especially where those changes support wider community use. Our grants also equip Christian charities and churches to help the most vulnerable and tackle social issues, including homelessness, poverty, climate change and cultural cohesion; and we provide funding for projects that support church growth and leadership and share the Christian faith. We also work with selected partners to preserve the UK and Ireland's rich history through funding to build and protect sustainable heritage skills.
