Church Open For
And Private Prayer
Please see our revised opening times for prayer and services that the St John's building will be open. In addition to opportunities for individual prayer, we will be holding a quiet service on the 1st Sunday evening of every month. This will be a 'said' service - unfortunately we are not able to include any singing. We will be following all guidelines to ensure safety of those who come along, including asking everyone to bring a face covering to wear.
We're really pleased to let everyone know that we are now able to open St John's Church building for Private Prayer on Sundays between 2 & 3pm and on Thursdays between 6 & 7pm, starting on Thursday 6th August. This is for individual prayer only, or for pairs or groups who are part of the same household.
Everyone is welcome to come for just a short time, or for the full hour, to sit quietly, reflect or pray. It doesn't matter whether you have been a church attender in the past or not - if you would find this helpful, you are most welcome.
We have closely followed the guidelines from the Church of England and have done all we can to ensure that these prayer times will be safe for everyone. It is now required that people coming in to a place of worship wear face masks, so please bring one with you. We would also ask you to follow the guidelines on the notices in the building, regarding social distancing and hand sanitising.
There will be someone on the door to welcome you and to help to make this a calm, prayerful and helpful time for everyone.
Sadly, we have now been instructed by Bishop James, along with the bishops of the other dioceses covering Greater London that we are no longer able to open our buildings for personal prayer. We will be putting notices on the outer church door and in the noticeboards to that effect in the morning.
This decision has been taken in the light of the escalating number of cases of Covid-19 in London, and the urgent need to do absolutely everything we can to reduce the potential for spread of this virus.
We had been planning to open the church on Sundays 10.30-11.30am and on Wednesdays 10-11am for personal prayer and reflection. As this is no longer possible, if you are able, it would be good to set aside time during these two hours in the week to pray at home, knowing that others in the church family are praying at the same time.
Even though the building will be closed, the Church continues to be alive and active. We will continue to record readings, prayers and talks and would encourage you to use these at home in addition to your own prayers and bible readings.
It is so important that we continue to support each other and those around us. Please continue to follow government and NHS advice to the letter, and keep in touch.
