What we provide

St John’s Church has been serving the community in Penge since 1850; we view the church as an important part of the community of Penge. Our Christian faith tells us to do all we can to meet the needs of those living around us and to be a centre of peace in the midst of a busy world.
We provide for families: we are committed to St John’s Primary School; we run a Parent and Toddler group on Mondays and Wednesdays, with the whole church complex used to facilitate general and messy play; we also run a version specifically for fathers once a month on a Saturday where we provide breakfast and time to bond with their children; and, in partnership with the school, we run a parenting course.
We provide for those in need: we run a CAP Debt Centre, to help those in debt in the area. Linked to these activities we run Breakfast/Café sessions for those in need of healing, prayer and reconciliation. Through the support of the community, we have set up and manage a Food Bank, providing for families in need of our help.
We provide a space for the community to come together:  amongst other things, we have held concerts, Christmas events, hustings at General Elections, and have been used by the local Police in order to hold a job fair for young people in Penge.
We provide human contact: our Community Chaplain visits people in Penge, builds connections within the community and works with the local Police. The church hosts a free, open, makeshift café within the church building for several hours each Thursday, attended by people with varying needs related to mental health, loneliness, addiction and unemployment.
We provide a venue: we hire out facilities to various groups during the week — the hall is currently used regularly for dance classes, puppy training, Zumba, NCT groups and birthday parties.
We provide a Christian space in Penge: through Sunday worship, we provide opportunities for people to find out more about the Christian faith.
